Fred Hutch Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) unites innovative research and compassionate care to prevent and eliminate cancer and infectious disease. We’re driven by the urgency of our patients, the hope of our community and our passion to pursue discoveries, scientific breakthroughs and healthier lives for every person in every community. Fred Hutch is an independent, nonprofit organization that also serves as the cancer program for UW Medicine.
The Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Cancer Consortium (the Consortium) has been a National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center since 1973 and it currently serves the entire state of Washington (WA). The Consortium's Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (OCOE) works to improve health outcomes and address cancer health disparities through authentic relationships, advocacy, and collaboration. This includes community-based research, resource support, and cancer prevention education informed by community-determined needs. With offices in Seattle, Sunnyside and Spokane, the OCOE team works to build community partnerships across WA.
OCOE’s mission is better outcomes for everybody. The OCOE team in Spokane is comprised of two Community Health Educators, or CHEs, working in the community to address and reduce cancer health disparities by fostering relationships, building trust, and working collaboratively with community partners to address priorities for cancer prevention programs. Examples include promoting and organizing wellness programs such as preventive cancer screenings, educational workshops, health fairs, and more.
