Did you know 1 BILLION people worldwide have a disability? 🌎 Thursday, May 16, 2024, marked the 13th Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The theme of this year’s Global Awareness Accessibility Day, “Built Without Barriers,” emphasized digital accessibility at the developer level, meaning at the front end of application development and not implemented as an “oh, by the way” afterthought. Stay tuned for a blog next week on some simple ways you can make your website more accessible! 👀 ID: People standing on top of a greyed out globe. There are a variety of different ages and races. There are 3 throughout the globe in wheelchairs, and one shows a person with a seeing eye dog.

As you may know, April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to raise awareness to promote autism acceptance, celebrate neurodiversity and individual differences, and continue to advance inclusivity and connectedness throughout the community. 🙌 At HireAbility, we celebrate neurodiversity and the value it brings to workplaces all over the region. This month, we were lucky enough to sit down with John Lemus, Advocacy Manager at AtWork! and Tom Miller Award for Advocacy recipient to hear his perspective on Autism Awareness Month and what he would like people to understand about living with Autism. https://lnkd.in/gRRAQpXS

This month we had the chance to attend a ribbon cutting for Northwest Center with Greater Spokane Incorporated. ✂️ Northwest Center was founded in 1965 by four Seattle moms who changed the world. When their kids with disabilities were rejected from school, they started their own. They wrote the first law in the nation guaranteeing public education to children with disabilities. They went on to help write the federal law now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which made public education possible for every child in the U.S. Today, Northwest Center is committed to eliminating ableism and meeting the challenge to do more for disability inclusion and our community. Northwest Center provides comprehensive disability-inclusive services from cradle through career. Learn more about Northwest Center here: https://ow.ly/sM1g50R9I15

Each March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), and their partners work together to highlight the many ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities. The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live. This year's theme is called “A World of Opportunities” – we’re celebrating people and working together to remove obstacles. Our goal is to build a community that’s committed to creating a world where everyone can do well and succeed. Learn more and get involved! ➡️ https://nacdd.org/ddam1/

Disability is a bad word, right? 🤔 WRONG! Sometimes people are nervous about saying the word “disability.” Being thoughtful with the words you choose to use when talking about people with disabilities is important but avoiding the term disability altogether is not helpful. It is important to understand the impact of universal design and how we are intentional in making things accessible, but ignoring a disability or using the term "otherly abled" can sometimes have the effect of invalidating the experiences of people living with disabilities.
